"Day 7 Atlantic Ocean - 14th November"
Here we are rolling along, 2 reefs in the main and
a reduced foresail poled out a la farfanella (goosewinged). The sea is
slate blue with fewer white horses than previously but occasionally a large
roller pushes Whisper up into the wind and Windy Bill hurriedly exerts himself
to make the necessary correction to keep her on course.
Yesterday, we all put our watches back one
hour as we crossed into a new time zone, we are now sharing this zone with
the South Sandwich Islands down in Antarctica. We will continue
to make these changes as we go, as this way we will not be jet lagged when we
arrive in the Caribbean. The downside of this procedure is that somebody
will draw the short straw each time and have to do an extra hour on
watch.
"Ship Ahoy" - Great excitement, we are not alone on
this vast ocean, Noel has just seen a merchant ship called Fuga heading for
Amsterdam. Mick has called it up on the radio for a weather forecast.
Evidently, there is a force 5-6 coming this way tonight but as it will be
behind us it will help us on our way. The Captain was very sweet and said
that even so we should be careful.
We are currently 605 miles away from our half way
mark, so most definitely are not nearly there yet. Everyone if fine and enjoying
the life at sea, so far not threatened mutinies.
