 "Showers and all that"
Chateaulin is quite beautiful, it is about 30 miles inland up a canal at the end
of a river Aulne. Evidently, Napoleon had the canal built so that he could move
his ships from Brest to Nantes and bring them out through the river
Loire to avoid the British blockade of Brest in the 1800's.  It didn't
work as the British blocked the entrance to the Loire and during the
battle of Quiberon Bay destroyed the majority of the relieving fleet of
ships that were trying join the main fleet.
Fortunately for us, the French appear to have
forgiven us and as it is so lovely here we have decided to stay for another
2 nights.  The local Muscadet wine is not only
very cheap but good; the mooring for a 36ft yacht is only £5 per night
and this includes free electricity, water, showers and the sun
shines!  What more could we want?  We have found a wonderful
Patisserie!  (Maria, you would think that you were in heaven in this sweet
shop, our cycle rides would start and end here every day!)  Also, I
have managed to purchase a SIM card so that I can download data to my iPad,
so maybe communications will become less of a hassle from now on, or at least
until we reach Spain.
I rather like river
cruising, there is plenty to see and the water is calm.  Noel is happy too,
as the fresh water will kill off any sea water plants and animals attached to
Whisper's hull, which will save us having to dry out and scrub
off.
The showers are interesting!  I want you to imagine a small grey box
similar to an electricity sub-station.  Entry is with a key which one uses
to unlock and then relock the door once inside, a necessity should you require
privacy.  The inside houses a huge boiler, various brooms and brushes for
cleaning, a long trough with 4 separate taps at various intervals and 2 shower
cubicles with hanging plastic curtains.  The hot and cold
taps are at the height of the shower head, so one does not need to be too
short, otherwise the whole process would be impossible.  I think that
the plumber was either very tall or ran out of copper pipe during the
installation.  Hot water was plentiful as was the very cold water,
both were experienced in the delicate tuning of mixing the two for a preferred
temperature.  Not easy whilst groveling far above ones head but eventually
achievable.
