"20th July - Sovereign Harbour,
Eastbourne"
Still enjoying the English Summer, we took a bus
ride yesterday to East Dean and walked up and over Beachy Head and then all the
way down and back along the never ending Promenade to the
marina. The views across the South Downs and Seven Sisters were simply
stunning and the old Beachy Head lighthouse looked very different from the top
of the cliffs than it had from sea level. Walking over the cliffs there
were beautiful meadow land flowers every where and the white of the
perpendicular cliffs lit by the bright sunlight was
glorious. Sea gulls soaring up from the cliffs below to above
our heads were illuminated to a translucent white and so elegant as they hung on
the thermal air waves. The strong Easterly wind was blowing straight into
our faces causing us to lean into it as we puffed up the hillside to the
top of the cliff. Our reward was the pub at the top, which cannot be seen
from the sea, where we enjoyed a sandwich and a beer/cider before continuing the
long trek down to Eastbourne and back to the Marina. The beach was full of
families enjoying the warm weather, kiddies laughed, jumped and shrieked in the
breakers and further out to sea, wind surfers were enjoying the strong winds,
scurrying across the surface at great speeds, some spending exhaustible energy
in trying to right themselves when they crashed! The more skilled
enjoyed the opportunity of leaping over the wash of the RNLI Rescue
Boat as it rushed out towards Beachy Head, shortly to return towing a small open
power boat and its occupants.
Tomorrow, it is time for us to think more seriously
about heading home and we plan to leave for Dover, which will possibly be our
last port of call before we return to
Brightlingsea. However, you never can tell where one might end
up when traveling with a 'Dilly'!
