For this sail Les stayed in Toronto and Bob Greenhalgh joined Timeless
making the crew Bob, Bob and John.
Timeless was now back to ‘as good as new’ thanks to the really professional
Discovery engineer, John. Thank you John.
As we left our mooring a big red sail boat was into it before our wash had
subsided!
Guess they were keen.
We set off last night at 7.00pm after checking out with customs and
immigration. You actually HAVE to take the boat and crew to their designated
dock to check out. However, the check was easy if it did involve lots of
stamping and signing from the officers.
The initial departure of St Georges Harbour was in very light winds and a
wrong turning on behalf of John down a narrow channel – that sorted we were on
our with – with the engine.
A few hours into the sail as the sun set we ate the first of our
pre-prepared meals and watched the winds begin to build from 200 degrees (SSW
‘ish). Soon the wind was taking over from the engine until finally the sail took
over completely.
We have been making good progress in the direction of Cape Hatteras as
advised by Commanders Weather so that we avoid the brunt of the big winds
forming to the SW of us and liable to be with us on Monday. The winds were high
teens for most of the night with little swell so Timeless just clipped along at
8 to 8.5 knots. At times we comfortably over 9 knots.
This morning the wind built to low 30’s. and have now eased back to the low
20’s – always from SSW.
Everything about this trip is pointing to a spirited sail. Not the sort of
conditions to catch the elusive Wahoo we have been desperate to add to our
menu.
Really looking forward to the sail!
