For months we’ve been trying to catch a wahoo. They are a
delicious white fleshed fish that look a bit like a barracuda....long and silver
but without the nasty sharp teeth. We’ve caught dozens of tuna, mahimahi
and barracuda (which you eat over here and they’re excellent)....but a wahoo has
eluded us....until today. Great excitement firstly when the line whirred
and secondly, when we saw it was a good sized wahoo. Saddest thing.....our
sailing buddies Balvenie aren’t here to share it! Our last few catches
we’ve happily been able to share with them as we’ve caught some good sized
fish. Never mind. Already we’ve had delicious fish/avocado and
tomato wraps for lunch and dinner tonight is sashimi followed by wahoo
steaks.
Before we left Santa Marta, I stocked up on fillet steak which was a
giveaway at $12kg. As the freezer is full....I’m regretting it a
bit! Never mind, there will be cruisers in the next anchorage who will
happily take some of the catch off our hands and....we will eat it for lunch and
dinner for the next few nights.
Sailing conditions today have been magic – wind has eased to 15 knots and
the sea has dropped away with only the occasional big swell coming through to
keep us on our toes. Night watch was busy as a few big black clouds
lurking kept sucking up the wind then producing big gusts. We’re doing
four hour/two hour watches (8pm until midnight, midnight until 4am, 4am until
6am and 6am until 8am) for this passage and seem to be coping okay. On
that note....time for an afternoon snooze.
All going well we should make landfall in Providencia by lunchtime
tomorrow.
