10th June
Our friends Bodo, Angelica and Lulu had decided
that they were going to set out early as they were heading up towards Rome and
some heavy winds were forecast in a couple of days.
We decided that we would go later in the
day and check the weather before departure. The weather forecast was looking
good and the sea was realtively calm. A French boat came in that had just sailed
from Sicily and they informed us that they had had a reasonable passage but just
before entering Rochella had experienced winds of up to 30knts,
Set sail around 15.20hrs and once clear of the
entrance the seas began to pick up an hour into our sail the wind died down to
around 10knts and we were able to put the sails up and sail quite comfortably
for a couple of hours. We had been forecast winds of around F 3-4 but within 4hrs
the wind got up to 30knts and the sea went from a fairly moderate
state to mountainous, really weird. Sometime later we heard this tremendous
crash below I went to check to find that our Sony TV Computer had landed on the
floor along with the kettle, in our haste to leave Rochella we were a little
remiss and had not secured everthing down.
The wind was relentless and did not go below 30knts
the direction was completley in contrast to what was forecast and we ended up
motor sailing under" barepoles".All in all we had a horrendous crossing with a
really confused sea,it was like being in a boiling cauldron, not a nice
passage.
We arrived Siracusa bay Sicily 07.30hrs absolutely
worn out.
11th June
Slept all day and most of the next.
13th June
1st day into Siracusa and it really is
lovely, reminds us both of Venice with its prominent waterfront.
