This morning got up and boat covered in black ash.  The dinghy had been left out to dry as when we got back in the evening partly deflated it to get boards out and wash the sand out. Before we could pack it away the ash had to be cleaned off and then decks washed down. The ash wash thick in the air and could smell the sulphur.

Left anchorage just before 9 and got the sails up, full main and working jib. By now the boat was covered again in ash so kept swabbing down the decks. when about 10 miles from the volcano went through a really dense area of ash with visibility down to 100 meters or so, we also had black faces as though we had been down the coalmines to work.

When about 10 miles north of the volcano position the thick dust cleared and most of the boat has been washed down and looks clean although feels very gritty. Got some high tech black sails out of it though.

Simple meal this evening vegetable soup and pineapple rings in juice I think.
