So we have finally said goodbye to Northern Ireland and I'm now sitting in the small marina at Port Ellen in the whisky island of Islay.

We had a good sail over from Rathlin, initially close hauled but then somewhat freer as the wind backed and the tide started to push us West.

Port Ellen is home to the distilleries of Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Unfortunately tours and tastings are booked up weeks in advance. The two local shops have no Islay malts on sale, although other whiskies are to be had. We therefore repaired to Islay Hotel for a dram from their extensive menu.
