We arrived in Bastia Tuesday and decided to stay a few days so we could have a domestic day and then a day hiring a car to explore the Island, which we didn’t do last year.

Our arrival coincided, horror upon horror, with the arrival of some heavy cloud and a few hours of rain – the first time in a month that it hasn’t been mainly sunny.

Today (Thursday) the sun returned and we took a car inland to the cultural and ancient capital of Corsica, ‘Corte’. The mountains still have snow on the tops, despite the fact that it is more than 25 degrees here by the sea, they are however over 2500 metres high so it isn’t really surprising.

Corsica is really quite a mixture of hills, mountains – some very green and covered in trees, others very rocky and barren - See pictures.

Tomorrow we hope, subject to weather, to make the 30 mile or so crossing to the Italian Island of Elba.
