We set off fairly early from Sorrento with the idea of sailing over to the Island of Capri and then turning around and heading South East back to the mainland along the coast past Positano and then on to Amalfi.

A very pleasant sail to and from Capri with the wind dropping along the coast.

It has to be said that while the Island of Capri looked rugged and spectacular the town/port didn’t look that amazing. By contrast the Amalfi coast line was probably the most spectacular we have seen in Italy.

We arrived about 2.00 pm at the small port of Amalfi. A small boat came out to take us to the marina – one of the guys in the boat boarded and explained that it was very difficult and he would act as the pilot. The first time I have ever had a pilot take me into the berth. He was right though – there was a tiny passage into the pontoons that were only metres from the rocks and beach and he handled the boat brilliantly. At the pontoon we did nothing - the pontoon attendants tied the boat up for us – and they were all so nice.

The afternoon was spent wandering around Amalfi – It appears that the towns in this area are really old dating back to the 1400’s. The cathedral was really wonderful – the bones of the apostle Andrew the fisherman are said to be buried here.

The following morning  16th – we decided to do some more sight-seeing before beginning to sail back North. So we caught a bus up into the hills to Ravello, which was said to be very pretty – as indeed it was. Again another fantastic old church and ancient town walls, gardens. The bus ride was itself amazing – tiny roads winding along the coastal cliffs and then into the hills – the views were fantastic.
