position 63:27N 20:16W. Vestmannaerjar Iceland.
We set sail from Torshavnyn Monday and arrived in Vestmannaerjar on Wednesday. It was a lively sail with strong winds behind us and big breaking waves threatening to engulf us! The effect of apparent wind means that when we sail at 10 knots it reduces the wind across the deck from 45 knots to 35 and makes life bearable. We took 50 hrs to cover the distance of 400 n miles! We rested for the night, cleared customs, ate out, and walked the town.
We left again at 5 am to cross the 110 n miles to Reyjkavik.and then it is mission accomplished and we can enjoy Iceland for a while! I can't get used to the fact that it never gets dark here at this time of year and I know why they call it ICEland.
Vestmannaerjar is a picturesque natural harbour tucked in next to an active Volcano. During a major eruption in 1973 the lava engulfed large parts of the town and flowed into the entrance to the harbour which is now quite narrow ! This is a major fishing port and the only place to berth was on the fuel quay surrounded by fishing trawlers.
