Course 095

A good day after things going bump in the night.

Domestic

Yesterday’s potential for disaster (once the bigger issue with the bog had been resolved) was the lack of gas pressure at the stove.  We started rationing it’s use so tea and coffee were off the menu for a while as the obvious conclusion was that we were running out of gas..

Eventually we got round to checking the cylinder which is lashed on the stern of the boat and difficult to get at.  It was still half full so the crisis was over and taking the regulator off / putting it back has removed whatever blockage there was.

Tea (for now, as we are short on tea bags) and coffee are back on the menu.

Sailing

We used the spinnaker set on a strop at the bow and sheeted hard like a gennaker all day and half of the night.  It worked well but by 3am the wind was rising and we hadn’t been easing and tightening the sheet to avoid chafe.  The result was that the main halyard snapped at the masthead and dumped the sail in the Atlantic.

Tim was hand steering in the cockpit so set to hauling it in and following his shout, Jez and Will piled on deck from bed dressed in underpants and a lifejacket to help the recovery and set the genoa in it’s place.

We are going to miss being shouted at to get up from a deep sleep at a moments notice to work in a cold, wet, hostile environment once we get home.  But right now it seems really appealing.

The timing was right and we have been making good time to a decent southerly breeze under full main and Genoa ever since.

Natural History

Another big pod of Pilot whales were alongside yesterday evening and we are awash with gannets.

New bird last night’  Looks like a Wood Pigeon with legs and feet trailing behind it and an odd tail with an extra wedge of feathers after the normal fan.  Dave S ?
