Trellis Bay...and Bitter End...then bitter cold!
18:29.854N 64:21.664W Continuing good sailing conditions and great weather....we headed to Trellis Bay, near the airport and Beef Island (See photo from the air) for two nights...then sailing on to Bitter End Yacht Club at the Northeast end of Virgin Gorda (sailing with jib and main in pictures). HISTORY: Virgin Gorda is the 3rd largest of the BVI's with a population of 3,000. The contrasts and natural beauty of the island are stunning....the Baths National Park to the southwest, and North Sound, effectively a saltwater lake, to the northeast. In 1595 Sir Francis Drake (the main channel in the middle of all the BVI's bears his name) staged his ships for his attack on Puerto Rico, as he sailed to the west from here. Today, North Sound is dominated by just about every type of water sport....wind surfing, swimming, snorkeling, paddle boards, hobie cats, lasers, and many more...battles still take place here, and attacks by one group or another are common, but all in modern day "water fun"! Having arrived on 5 February, we head home on 21 February...and there is snow in Annapolis!! |
