6 June Navigated over to this gorgeous island, . Worked our way through the coral reefs, careful to keep the sun behind us so that we have a chance of seeing the ‘bommies’. Great snorkelling in waist-high clear water. Called in at Treasure Island on the way back - aka Euaki Island - which is one of the centres for whale-swims. The whales (humpbacks) arrive in July and stay until October. They come from Antarctica to the South Pacific to mate/calve in the bay. Very tempting to arrange a trip someday and stay in the beach lodges to see the pods, which can be up to 200+ at the height of the season. The bay is seems as if it is full of blowholes according to Mark and is quite a sight. |
