Arrival in Santa Marta was fairly seamless. We wanted to avoid an arrival in the dark, so dawdled our way across the Caribbean Sea on Wednesday night and arrived in the daylight into Santa Marta bay. The finish line was between two islands with off-lying rocks. Other boats arriving during the previous night told of 50 knot winds, and anchoring in the bay, so we were pleased to avoid that. Santa Marta is charming - well, big city charming. People great and very friendly. Simon Bolivar died in Santa Marta and we visited the museum/shrine dedicated to him - picture below - he’s the one on top. His goal was for a ‘Bigger Columbia’ - to unite Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador into one nation which he didn’t achieve but he did achieve independence from the Spanish and he is much revered and loved by Colombians.
