Huahine and the blue-eyed eels
We set sail for Huahine - Pippa’s first overnight sail. We did 3 hour watches through the night with 2 on watch. Great stars - Southern Cross of course. We arrived around 7.00 for the Avapehi Pass into the lagoon, and then carefully followed the red and green lateral markers - red for the land side and green for the reef which takes some getting used to. We anchored in the Baie d’Avea in the south of the island, inside the reef, so well sheltered and went ashore for lunch at Chez Tara - which was billed as a Polynesian feast. It was fun with a great ukulele band although the food was pretty dire. Back to the boat, where we all collapsed for an afternoon snooze, then more Canasta and bed. The next day we hired a car through the hotel La Mahana (good breakfast) and set off for an island tour. First stop was a pearl farm where we learnt how they insert a small starter into the live oyster which is gradually covered by mother-of-pearl (nacre). Then onto the Marae, the sacred blue-eyed eels and finally the Huahine Yacht Club for excellent lunch in low-key beach side restaurant - no dress code here.. stocked up in the Super U supermarket - huge Aladdin’s Cave of a shop, and then back home in Avea for another game of Canasta and bed.. . |
