Saturday 13th April to Tuesday 16th April - We have spent 4 nights here in Fakarava - the second biggest of the Tuamoto Islands. We entered by the southern pass, Passe Tumakohua, a little before slack water but we shot in safely and anchored opposite the village to the south of Tetamanu. Wasn’t a great deal there but charming locals and we found a restaurant to serve us steak frites for 4 provided we pre-ordered. The south pass is famous for snorkelling and diving. The pass is known as the ‘magic carpet’ and it is very impressive - gorgeous colours - pink, blue, green corals, and fabulous stag heads. Loads of little fish and some big groupers. Sharks of course - the black fin type. We didn’t see the ‘Wall of Sharks’ as the weather was not good enough and the sand affected the visibility.

Great evening party with other World Arc boats on the nearby beach - raining hard though. The rain continued for the next 2-3 days but we managed to find some more moments to snorkel and again it was wonderful - close to the surface and full of fish.

We didn’t like the Sucker Fish - Remora - circling the back of the boat looking for scraps - here’s a picture of one - showing the hideous sucker on the fish’s head which it uses to stick onto its host.
