With our downwind rig - poled out genoa, staysail, main - there are lines everywhere and a gybe (change of direction) downwind takes a very long time to organise. The finish for the ‘race’ coming into the island of Sao Vicente was to leave the small rock/island Ilheu dos Passaros to starboard which meant a gybe in the dark on a coast which we don’t know at all, with very few lights. Strong accleration zone like winds - terrifying. In the end it was of course ok and the wind was kind, bending around so that we didn’t in the end have to do the worrisome gybe. We did have to get the genoa away quickly and sails away.

Arriving into the bay however we had a sickening moment when the engine wouldn’t start - genoa sheet around the prop - eek. We sailed under staysail to a spot to anchor as we couldn’t get into the marina with no power. However our safe anchor spot turned out to be a dangerous due to local currents so the local marina sent out Tuga and his team in a small but powerful rib - his team was 5 or 6 local CV islanders - young and enthusiastic - climbing onto the boat, pulling up the anchor by hand. Nothing was too difficult and in a brisk wind we managed to get pushed onto the fuel dock to wait for morning.

Perhaps not a great end to a wonderful trip from GC but we were so pleased to be in and tied up safely we didn’t care and we slept very well.
