Fiji - Lau Group
After a 2 night/2 day passage we arrived in Lomaloma. The World Arc had arranged for clearance of customs in the Lau Group, the islands to the East of the Fiji Archipelago. The customs/immigration/health team were flown in to Lomaloma (picture attached). We were the last boat of the group to arrive and I think the clearance team were keen to get back home to Suva. First night was spent in Lomaloma and we visited the village. Visitors to a Fijian are obliged to do ‘sevusevu’ on arrival in a village which means visiting the local chief and giving a gift of 1/2 kilo of cava in a formal ceremony. The agent had dealt with this particular obligation for the group of World Arc boats so we didn’t have to do this on this occasion, but we purchased some cava (dried root which is crushed and mixed with water) to have some ready for the next village. Anchorages in the Lau Group are remote and very beautiful, although the coral reefs mean you have to be very careful when navigating. We moved up to Bavatu Harbour for the following night, and stayed for 2. Good walks and fun sundowner at the ‘Bavatu Yacht Club’ with some ukulele playing to finish off a great |
