According to the pilot book Atlantic Islands this is a perfectly easy entrance - the ‘landfall of choice for most yachts visiting Madeira’.  Entrance in the middle of the night however was quite something - a sharp right turn to starboard immediately  under the cliff face with a southwesterly squell and the sound of crashing waves on the beach and rocks to our left. Patrick steered us in straight and all was fine - nearly squashed a very small rib on the fuel pontoon but we tied up safely and collapsed into bed.

According to Orlando from the marina staff the port is run by the mafia and he is not impressed with that.  We have been happy here - a good little café called the Captain’s Bar serving Limpets as the specialty - surprisingly good, loads of butter and garlic.  It is remote though - 13 km from Funchal.  We have hired a car and explored Madeira quite a bit.  We drove up into the mountains on Tuesday with our friends Peter and Carina who are joining us later.  Delicious mountain top restaurant in Curral das Freiras, Restaurant Sabores do Curral - everything with chestnuts - pork with chestnuts sauce,  chestnut ice cream/cheesecake.. they say to eat meat in the Madeira mountains and fish by the sea, so we did.  Beef skewers on laurel kebab sticks.

Then an afternoon sightseeing in Monte with the botanical gardens and another delicious fish restaurant A Pipa in Porto da Cruz.  Rupert and Patrick had parrot fish with splendid teeth.
