Mo’orea
We set off for Mo’orea in the afternoon, to Cook’s Bay which is the easternmost of the 2 bays at the top of the island. We anchored at the top of the bay, just inside the reef alongside Fatjax. We invited the crew of Fatjax to join us for a drink which was fun. Mo’orea is full of things to do and see. The nearest place to tie up the dinghy was by the Mo’orea Beach Cafe which turned out to be an emporium of merchandise for Veuve Clicquot but they were very good to us allowing us to use their dock, and we returned the favour by having an expensive lunch there and an evening sundowner. We hired a car for the day and drove up to the Belvedere, a beautiful viewing spot. We then pottered on around the island to visit the Tiki Village Experience which was as touristy as it sounds, but it was fun seeing the dancers rehearsing for the evening spectacle. We moved to the second of the bays, Opunohu, and anchored up on the west side of the bay, again close to the reef. This was a perfect spot to take the dinghy to snorkel with the sting rays and sharks which we did. The local guides used to feed them to encourage them to congregate in the same spot - the practice has now stopped but the rays and sharks were still there in vast numbers. Patrick jumped in and had a very close encounter with a sting ray which he claimed felt soft and silky. Lunch was at Coco Beach, a beach cafe on an island. Delicious hamburger in a wonderful location. |
