The Diary of Sonsy Lass

42:34.93N 18:12.71E Monday 3rd June. This trip was some 200 miles which meant our first overnight passage of the new sailing season and what a trip it turned out to be. Just a little bit challenging to say the least. We left Corfu in the morning with light winds  which gave us the chance to use our new genniker sail (see pic).  The winds then became a little flukey so down she came.  Once we passed the narrow channel between Corfu and Albania, we were out into the open and had tremendous sailing winds. These conditions lasted until early evening then it all went pear-shape. The winds got up quickly to gale force and the seas became very confused, breaking all over the place. A horrendous electric storm then came in with heavy rain and hailstones at times. Unfortunately this lasted through until early morning giving us no let up then it suddenly calmed down at dawn.  We had the weather forecast from a number of sources but none forecasted these conditions.

Finally, we arrived at Cavtat, Croatia and it felt good to be tying up. The trip has lasted 36 hours and we were thoroughly bedraggled, having had no sleep. However after a few drinks we were totally refreshed.  Luckily we had had no equipment failures as a few of the other boats experienced real problems.
