32:49.60N 35:01.50E Another day another trip. This time we went up the coast to Akko which is a city built on top of a city. A mind blowing place. This was a Crusader port and stronghold. The walled city was intriguing with a complex of buildings and escape tunnels, all leading to the harbour for a convenient getaway. The quality of this ancient citadel is astonishing with only a fraction of it excavated so far. Its saviour is a bit bazaar as when the Crusaders were defeated and left the Ottomans moved in. As opposed to levelling everything to the ground, which was customary, they filled in the old city which effectively has preserved all the buildings in a pristine condition, an archaeologist's dream. Back to the marina and we were picked up by an Israeli family to spend the evening with them at their home. This gave us an insight into how ordinary families lives revolve around active service and conscription. The couple were charming, with two sons, one of which had to do seven years service because of his training, and a daughter who did two years. They are building a new country and are all committed to do their part. A bit like the UK at the start of the last war.
