So a brief day sail yesterday to La Gomera . The primary objective was to obtain formal customs/immigration stamps which, (Bob having taken the precaution of calling the Marina here to check)  we were told would be available.  It was also an opportunity to test the new downwind rig.  This rig comprises two head sails flown from a singly forestay - the brain child of Dolphin Sails.  It was quite complex to rig which we did under the tutelage of the Oyster Representative that was with us earlier this week. However, it will be clear that some among us had our misgivings.........

Anyway, duly set and ready to go we did indeed launch it as we approached Gomera. Or at least we would have done had we got the string the right way round!  After a patient 30 minutes re rigging the string we flew it successfully down to San Sebastian de La Gomera to a pleasant enough marina berth an dinner at a rather delightful restaurant in a romantic setting by the beach. (Which had been recommended by Peter and Jane Craggs – Trompeta).

What was not so successful this morning though was our attempt to “clear out” of the European Community.  Rather than the authoritative stamp of an officious border control person, the marina seemed to be offering to stamp out passports with its own business stamp – our passports to bear the legend:  “Marina de La Gomera” -  an offer which we declined. Rather, we crafted an official looking document with the Ship’s stamp and the Marina stamp with which we hope to blag our way into Cape Verdes. Those planning to join us in CV would do well to check – before checking in to their flights -  that the blog is still active following our arrival in CV!

So anyway – preparations are now underway for our departure. The crew is briefed and we are now stowing and making ready……….
