As the first signs of Spring arrive here in the Alps (at last), I am reminded it is time to fire up the Bamboozle blog again in eager anticipation of another cruising season in the South Pacific.

It has been an amazing ski season here in Val d'Isre with an huge amounts of snow falling over the course of the winter (the snowiest for 55 years according to the old locals) and as I write this, with just one day to go until the start of May, there are still over 3 metres of snow on the upper slopes and all the runs back down into the resort are still open and skiable. We certainly haven't seen as much sun as usual but in my opinion the quality of skiing has more than made up for that. We have had some truly memorable powder days and Lucy is now the proud owner of a beautiful pair of enormous off-piste skis and I am working hard to convince her of the benefits of touring and walking uphill with skins on your skis! Many good friends have been out to visit and have enjoyed some superb days skiing and a very occasional long mountain lunch. As a result we are now having to train hard to work off those extra kilos of winter padding (well I am anyway!) from too much hearty Savoyard fare.....and particularly all that cheese! In a rash moment in the depths of winter we both signed up to a sprint triathlon event in Arundel at the end of May so we are swimming, running and cycling like mad in a frantic attempt to make sure we can at least remain in touch with the back of the field.

We will head back to New Zealand on 2nd June and are looking forward to seeing Bamboozle after her long rest. The plan is to get her ready and provisioned for the year and then to make a shakedown cruise up the coast of the North Island to Opua hopefully before the kiwi winter gets too settled in. The idea then is (probably) to head towards Fiji and to explore some of the islands we have not yet visited.....if you wonder why we are heading back to Fiji again you just need to go back and read some of our blog entries from 2012!

So it's "au revoir Val d'Isre" and we look forward to a bit of "Kia Ora, Aotearoa"!

A magical day of ski touring in the high mountains.....it really is worth the effort to skin up into the backcountry where the magnificent space and solitude remind me of the open ocean.
