After such a quick start to the passage we have now slowed down considerably
to a more sedate pace but continue to make steady progress towards Nuku
Hiva. We covered the first half of the trip (1500nm) in just over 7 days
which is a record we are unlikely to break for quite some time but the winds
have now dropped to 12-15 knots and backed to ESE or E allowing us to get
our big colourful downwind sails up. Much as we loved the speed this is
considerably more relaxing and it is nice to be able to sleep without having
to wedge oneself into the corner of the bunk with pillows and a lee board.
The days and watches have developed a regular rhythm, the miles slip by, and
suddenly we are counting the days until we hope we might get there, rather
than the days since we left. We changed our clocks on board again yesterday
as we have travelled 40 degrees of Longitude since we left Villamil and we
were beginning to get out of synch with the daylight....our "Sundowner Happy
hour" (diet coke and crisps!) seemed to be taking place in the bright
sunshine of mid-afternoon so we decided it was time for a change.
I'm pleased to report that so far the passage remains pretty uneventful. Now
things are a bit less bumpy Lucy is back in baking mode and there is a warm
loaf, fresh out of the oven ready for lunch today. I have started fishing
again (unsuccessfully so far!) spurred on by a report from another yacht
that they have just caught a 155cm long Wahoo. Frankly I'm not sure we need
quite that much fish on board for the two of us but we have a lot of pickled
ginger and wasabi to get through this year.
