Heading towards Galapagos

It is Wednesday night and we are just finishing off the preparations for our
departure towards Galapagos in the morning. We were going to stop for a day
or two at some small islands called Las Perlas about 50 miles off the coast
but we decided this afternoon that we both felt like just getting on with
the next big leg.

The Galapagos islands are a little over 900 miles south west of here but the
trip takes us across the windless band north of the equator so we are loaded
up not only with food and drink for the coming months but also with as much
diesel as we can sensibly carry. We have been talking to a couple of yachts
currently on route as they labour their way through the frustratingly fluky
breeze and the forecast doesn't get much better but that is the norm for
this time of year.

We have spent the last few days finishing off our provisioning as you can
see from the accompanying picture of Lucy in the wine cellar! Yesterday we
went to the big vegetable market which is Panama's equivalent of Covent
Garden which was an amazing experience especially given our limited Spanish.
We were both a little worried about the prospect of scurvey but now have a
sack of grapefruits and a sack of oranges to keep it at bay.

We will keep you posted as to how we get on but I am assured by the purser
that we have enough chocolate on board if we are still out there for Easter!
