Raising the Mainsail

The trip to Garrucha was plain sailing, well plain motoring really, not much sailing at all. The sun was shining and the sea was calm-ish. In our pilot book there is an aerial photo of Gurrucha from 2017 showing the “new” marina looking fairly empty. We assumed some  six years later it would have filled up a bit. However this was not the case, there were very few visiting boats, all of which (including ourselves) were moored alongside rather than stern to and yes we had prepped for stern to again. I wonder if it is the commercial nature of part of the port that is keeping the boats away. There is some king of gravel loading facility all down the east side.

Raising the mainsail on Moose is never straightforward! There are lines coming down from high up the mast called lazy jacks, these hold up the sail bag that stores the mainsail when not in use and guide the sail back into the bag when it is lowered. It’s a great system and it makes lowering the mainsail easy. However, when the sail is raised it has to go up between the lazy jacks and this is not so easy as Moose’s sail has full length horizontal battens that protrude from the leach (trailing edge of the sail). They don’t stick out far, just enough to get caught on the lazy jacks on the way up. When they get caught you have to lower the mainsail an bit until they are free and try again, which often results in a lot of ups and downs. There is another line that runs through the lazy jacks and allows you to pull the furthest aft lazy jack forwards slightly, (it’s the aft one that catches the batten ends). It’s taken me three years but I am just starting to get the technique of adjusting that aft lazy Jack to avoid the batten ends. This morning’s sail raise only required one “down a little bit please Bosun”. Hopefully tomorrow’s will have none.

I hope you can see the lazy jacks in the  photo of Moose in Gurracha.

We are now nearly half way to Aguadulce and all is going well.
