Saint Florent Corsica to Elba, Italy. 13th august
Calvi to Saint Florent, Corsica 12th-13th August 2015. Saint Florent, Corsica to the Island of Elba, Archipelago Tuscano, Italy. Hi all Another early start with Tony lifting the anchor from Saint Florent, Corsica at 07.00hrs to motor in calm seas around the Cap Corse, the large finger-like headland which points due north on the top of Corsica. I joined him later on deck and we motored in calm conditions. Our intention was to round cap Corse and to head south to anchor in a bay on the east coast, Macinaggio. After refuelling in Macinaggio the wind suddenly filled and gave us a gift wind angle to sail directly to the Island of Elba. It was already 1pm but we looked at the pilot book for safe anchorages and calculated that with a great course and continued speed we could make it safely into a bay to anchor before dark. So we quickly set sail and enjoyed a wonderful direct angle, always a treat for sailors….even we get fed up with all this tacking lark….with a constant NE breeze, beam reaching straight to Elba only motoring the last few miles as the wind died. We always make these decisions with a back up plan if arriving at a new bay, even if recommended in the pilot book, as often things change, fish farms can appear or moorings which prevent anchoring. We arrived at Fetovia, a lovely bay but completely full of yachts and day moorings, we moved on to Calvio, this was also busy but quite exposed to the swell. Our next option meant we needed to push on quickly before dark as it was further than we had planned to sail. Finally at 20.45 hrs just literally before dark we anchored safely in the bay of Marina di Campo, 59.8 nm. A very nice calm night at anchor. Photos of … Sailing to Elba.
