Tioram as arrived in Sadinia. At 21.43 last night
on the 20th May we dropped anchor in the small bay of Cala Coda Cavallo
which is a few miles south of the main town Olbia on the north east coast of
Sardinia.Yesterday as a mixed bag of weather starting in the morning with very
light winds. grey and over cast. The breeze then picked up and weather
improved so up went our cruising chute and we have a great 4 or 5 hours
under sail travelling at 7 knots. All day we had a large swell from the
south coming in on to our port quarter. We think this was caused by
the high winds forecast on the Sicily Straits about 200 miles south of us. At
times the ride was a little uncomfortable reminding me of that long
Atlantic swell. The final few hours of the journey the wind dropped and we
motored on quickly trying to get into the anchorage before dark. The Sun went in
and weather turned grey and cold. Visability was down to 6 miles. As we
approached the coast it was like sailing into the west coast of Scotland. skys
darkened and we thought at may turn into a thunder storm. When you approach
a strange coast you take great care using radar, electronic and paper charts.
The radar overlay onto the electronic charts showed an error of around 2.5
miles. This is very unusual. The datum of the electronic chart we were using was
out. So a very careful appoach with radar and paper chart was called
for.
We have had a great trip, the weather as been kind
to us, we needed a little more wind to sail more often but to do a nonstop 700
mile trip in the Med without weather problems is a result. After a good
nights sleep we are heading up Cannigione to spead a couple of nights and boat
clean. May thanks to Debs and Pete for all there help.
