Hello from Tioram,
We arrived safely in Las Palmas --Gran Canaria at 3.20 pm
today ( Boat time) 2.20pm local time. Our sailing yesterday afternoon saw
a slight increase in wind but we checked the weather and all looked
ok.
At 7.15pm Janet called 'land ho' and saw Lanarote, the
wind dropped into the night and we motored in a lovely evening with the rise and
fall of the Atlantic swell.
At 9am this morning we sighted Fuerteventura and the
Montana Cordones mountains rose out of the mist and were silouhetted by the
early morning light.
At 10am we were passed by a Yacht called Sarabi of
Colchester on the port beam
Our overnight trip was much more comfortable than the
previous night and we only made a small course change for a large vessel on
coming also to port.
We sighted Gran Canaria and enjoyed a nice lunch whilst
nearing the island. I could see the contour of the island as we came in from the
North East . The Island stretched away to the South and I remembered the last
time I saw the shape of the hills disappearing into sea---------5 years ago
when I was on the Challenge yacht we trickled down the side of the island for
several hours becalmed after a light winds at the start of the ARC
race( fond memories for the friends I made on the trip ).
We entered the port and marina, refuelled and have a nice
stern too berth on the sea wall.
The trip has been really interesting although sadly
no dolphins spotted for Janet.
Over to Janet for her thoughts about the trip
...............................
What an experience! We have had an amazing 5 days with so
many memories to take back with us.The atlantic swell beats the Solent and
Channel chop anytime.Skipper Tony was great and instilled confidence , I
never felt anxious at any time, and those of you who know me will understand
that that is quite an achievement. I did the watches with Tony and as long as I
fed him regular tomato sandwiches he was as happy as Larry.
Before I do any more long distances,as I will certainly do
if I have the opportunity, I shall have to have more practice at staying awake
at night-I was hopeless, and was always longing for my bunk. I did try bribery
to get Dominique to do my night watches without any success.
Thanks Tony and Tina for a great opportunity which we have
really enjoyed, and for your kindness and thoughtfulness on route.Have a great
ARC trip wih your crew-we will be following your journey with great
interest.
Thats all for now....
Talk to you all soon, Thanks for following our
trip
