The tiny coves contain small pebbled beaches protected by the steep cliffs
and by the channel reaching across to the town of Mitika on the mainland.
The white pebbles reflect the sunlight giving the bays turquoise water. The
beach near Aghios Donatos became famous as it was a favourite of Aristotle
Onassis and Jackie when they visited with their yacht, Christina. In the
60’s and 70’s these places were clearly ‘off patch’ for the wealthy seeking
privacy. Today, the coastline is equally sleepy, almost inaccessible from
inland by walking paths and now visited by yachts having lunch time
stopovers.
In the channel between Kalamos and Mitika the view in both directions is
spectacular from the sea------------ the lush steep slopes of the island with
turquoise beaches and the agricultural plains of the mainland steeply rising to
the mountain range in the distance.
Kalamos town harbour is a small pretty working harbour, now busy in summer
with the mainly visiting yachts. The tiny infrastructure provides two cafes, two
grocers, three taverna's, a bakers, one bar and the occasional
accommodation. In the winter the locals reclaim it. The total number of
permanent island residents is said to be 250 although a recent census recorded
543??
We enjoyed two lovely days and evenings in the harbour and exploring the
island------------here are the photographs half the photos as too many to send
in one hit . Kalamos pics continued follows this blog.
The lush shoreline of Kalamas
Kalamos Harbour and village life
Golf buggies are the only form of transport on Kalamos as they are small
for the narrow steep streets and dirt tracks and---- electric as there is no
petrol station on Kalamos !!!!!
