Day 14 – Noon 1st June to Noon 2nd June

One hundred and forty nine. Might not mean much to you but it means everything to us. That was our daily mileage yesterday and it was our best day in the entire trip. We can smell victory.

But the weather is relentless in making us fight for every inch. We had 4 metre swells overnight and we were getting thrown about like a cork.  Poor old Graham had just whisked up the remaining eggs to make a Spanish omelette when a huge wave tipped the lot over the worktop. What a mess – it took well over an hour to clean up. So we had surprise omelette instead. The surprise being no eggs.

The wind also changed direction and dawn saw us pole dancing. Going onto the foredeck at first light and getting my old friend the whisker pole rigged in 4 metre swells was a challenge but we managed. It’s surprising how quickly you can wake up when you have the North Atlantic soaking you. But while lying on the foredeck with my nose just above the water several dolphins came to wish us good luck. At least we know whose side they’re on.

Otherwise it’s a continuous round of disturbed sleep, gobbled meals and helming the boat. This crossing is tough.
