We checked out of Ponta Delgada and asked to fill up with diesel, to be told there had been a problem with  the connection pipe of th delivery truck and they had no fuel. Big problem, there was no way we could embark on the last 800 mile leg with anything less than a full complement of fuel, particularly as the forecast is not great, showing light Easterly winds for the first third of the trip. The guy in the marina contacted another small marina down the coast and said they had fuel but the entrance was small and we might need to use the dinghy. We left and motor sailed to Vila Franco de Campa, where we found a small marina and fishing boat wharf, all in the process of enlargement and  modernisation. We tied up as directed to the fishing wharf  and a charming young girl with excellent English opened a trapdoor in the ground, revealing a long hose, we started to fill our cans but only filled one before the pump broke. The girl telephoned her boss who arrived in his truck after half an hour. His wife, or daughter, I am not sure which, then told me, again, in excellent English, that they owned the local petrol station, we loaded the cans into the back of her pick up and off we went, filled the cans and brought them back and loaded them safely aboard P3. All was well and the diesel was cheap enough at 1 euro a litre. We were just settling down to lunch before pushing off when a guy with only one hand started shouting at us to clear off, in Portugese. I don’t know what his problem was but he was the harbour master or similar, I think, and he obviously did not like us! We left and had our lunch at sea. The wind has been on the nose all night and we have been motoring after ouir usual 3 or 4 hours of tacking and getting nowhere fast. As I type this it is 0800 on Monday, calm sea, 8 knots of headwind and we are making slow progress and praying for the wind to go around to the North as it is forecasted to do.
