Whales

The morning of the 25th dawned sunny and clear with, once again, no wind, we had just finished breakfast when we spotted whales off to port in the distance, we altered course and approached them slowly, stopping a respectable distance from them, we found ourselves in the middle of a large pod of Orcas or Killer whales. They were quite unperturbed by our presence, showing neither interest or fear at our presence, one enormous male surfaced about 25 yards in front of the boat, twice, moving so gracefully and slowly, truly an awesome sight, as he submerged the water disturbance showed how large he was, he must have been 8 metres  long and probably weighed in at around 7 or 8 tons, quite an experience. The rest of the day was spent motoring across a calm sea in bright sunshine with absolutely no wind. Now 0300 on the 26th and the breeze started around midnight, at last the blessed engine is off after running continuously for 26 hours and we are sailing over a calm sea in bright moonlight at 6.5 knots on a beam reach, perfect. Joe had both fishing lines out at 0500 this morning and we must have gone through a shoal of monster tuna or something similar, both reels screamed at almost the same time and both lures were snapped off, no fish! Tried all day but not a sniff! GPS is off again, every night it goes off for several hours, we have no idea why, we have four GPS’s on board and they all go off together, saying ‘poor satellite coverage’ it is a mystery, by traditional navigation we have 162 miles to go and should arrive early tomorrow morning, we shall all be glad to get there now.
