30st August 2013– Katha
A huge welcome awaits us as we arrive at Katha – where Eric Blair, Pen name George Orwell was posted here from December 1926 to June 1927. It was the setting for his novel Burmese Days
The house belonging to one of Eric Blair’s officers and his wife
Now used as a classroom for a few students learning English
The old British Club,, fast becoming a ruin
The inside of the old British Club with his fireplace and staircase
Our rickshaw man patiently waits our return
Carrying merchandise on shoulder pole to the market in town
Arranging the flowers into bunches for shrine offerings
Plenty of dried salted river fish in the market
Fresh river fish too
Legs are cheaper than bullocks!
This Chinese tractor costs a good deal more though!
Washing was going on at most of the easier river access spots – like these steps I don’t fancy how white her washing will be after this muddy water however! |
