Island of Khizi, Lake Onega

Khizi is near the center of Lake Onega and is 3.5 miles long and wide.  Settlements and churches on the island were known from at least the 15t century.  The major church and bell tower were built in the 18th century.

Today, only a small rural settlement remains, making an open-air musuem with more than 80 historical structures.  Arriving by boat is the only option!  It is included on UNESCOS’s list of World Heritage sites.

These classic ‘onion shaped’ domes are built to stop the snow from resting on the roofs.

We must be mad having a beer and sausages outside as we leave, it was a ‘tad’ cold!  Gluewein is what we really needed!

It has seven locks and three hydroelectric power stations,of  which we only saw one, all the others being done either during lunchtime, or whilst we were asleep!
