"Oceania is us."

As we explore the island of Nuku Hiva, here in French Polynesia, we
understand more fully how it has come to be that Pacific islanders focus not
on the tininess of their landmasses but on the vastness of the ocean which
surrounds them. 50% of Pacific islanders, more than 7.5 million people, live
within 30 kilometres of the coast. "Pacific island people rely on the ocean,
its biodiversity, and the ecosystem services it provides for their
well-being and security." Sue Miller et al. The region is often referred to
as Oceania, islanders see themselves as living on large ocean states, over
98% of their 38.5 million square kilometre territory is ocean. Epeli
Hau'ofa, a Tongan, wrote the following, which describes the island mindset
perfectly:

"Oceania is vast, Oceania is expanding, Oceania is hospitable and generous,
Oceania is humanity rising from the depths of brine and regions of fire
deeper still, Oceania is us. We are the sea, we are the ocean, we must wake
up to this ancient truth."

The island of Nuku Hiva is littered with archaeological sites, which tell
the story of bygone times when the island was much more populated than
presently. Vast volcanic boulders were hauled to settlement sites to form
solid foundations for simple and ornate family dwellings, communal gathering
areas, cooking areas, and storage spaces. The site that we visited had a
tranquil feeling, where one could almost hear the islanders of yore going
about their daily business.

The Marquesas archipelago became widely known in the 1840's upon the
publication of Herman Melville's novel. "Typee" and in more recent times
when Paul Gaugin and Jacques Brel took up residence. In 2002 Nuku Hiva
gained new fame as it was the setting for the fourth season of the popular
"Survivor" TV series.

We have experienced the Marquesan charm that dazzles all those who pass
through. John Hunter Holmes, who was to get married in Moorea later this
month, has changed his plans to enjoy his nuptials in this mystical volcanic
landscape. He has left Irene IV to prepare for the festivities. We wish him
and Warsan all the very best for the happy day and for their future
together.
