Hello from Hurghada...for those of you who think we're just on an extended holiday, we'll bring you up to date on what's been doing this past week...on our passage from Port Suez to Hurghada, the generator decided to not start...so after we arrived in Hurghada, our first priority was to get it running again...the generator on Dany II is not an option, it's a necessity, especially since it's the main source of power for the
autopilot...after much prodding, poking, tracing fuel lines, cleaning the injector, adjusting the valves, talking the to techs at Farymann in both Greece & Germany, ( both were very helpful), we finally got it started again after 5 frustrating days...whew!... after that problem was solved, we decided to take a tour to Luxor, the city of many Egyptain ruins...summer is an insane time to to this trip, but we didn't have any option, so off we went, leaving Dany II to fend for herself...we opted to just 1 nite & 1 day...off we went with 7 other tourists, 4 French, 2 Swiss, 1 German, & us...an interesting mix...after a 3 1/2 hr. drive through the desert, we arrived at the lush shores of the Nile river, & the city of Luxor...things were going great until we met our "tour guide", who was more interested in selling us more tours & unwanted trinkets...we managed to convince him that we were only interested in seeing the sights that were on our itenary...not off to a good start...early the next morning we arrived at the huge site of the Temples of Karnak...this site covers over 2 sq. mi., so we were anxious to get going before it got too hot...by this time, the temps were rising steadily with the sun & the vendors selling drinking water were making a fortune!...once prodded into action, our guide finally gave us an introductory spiel & showed us a few things within the main temple & the sacred lake, where he then sent us off on our own...fortunately 2 of our group had previously visited Karnak, so they were able to give us a bit more information...so much for the guide!...later in the afternoon, we finaly made it to the Valley of the Kings...the temps. were hitting 40 C. + by this point...once again out guide gave us a brief introduction & we were sent off to explore the tombs on our own..by this time we were just as happy to have him do his
disappearing act...when these tombs were opened, the decorative paintings on the walls & ceilings were in extremely good condition, the colors still bright & vivid after centuries of time!...even now, most of the paintings are not protected & they're still standing up to hundreds of sweaty hands touching them everyday!...after viewing the tombs, we staggered out into the heat & glare of the desert, in search of more water, & our elusive tour guide...both easily found...back to town & a walk along the Nile where lots of the local sailing boats, Felucas, were out taking advantage of a good breeze...too bad there wasn't enough time to go out for a bit, but the mini van was waiting to take us back to Hurghada...things were going great until the driver got lost trying to deliver us back to our various hotels/ marina...unfortunately we were the 2nd to last to be delivered!...Dany II was a welcome sight, with cold beers & wine in the fridge...great to be "home"!...we'll be heading south soon, stopping at a few reefs along the way for some diving & snorkeling, before we clear out of Egypt in Port Galib.
