Yo. We arrived at Mindelo at 4am this morn. In the dark
of course. Even the moon went behind the clouds, the lovely full moon that has
been with us for the last 8 days! However, no prob, thanks to the ever-ready,
all seeing, magic of the GPS chart plottter. This little box of wonder can guide
you straight to a pontoon berth if that's what you need, even if you personally
can't see more that 6 feet in front of you. However, we didn't test it to the
limit, so anchored off the harbour and went into the marina this morning in
daylight. It is a commercial port, lots of small freighters at anchor or in
dock. We were close to one which ran a constant, loud generator, Tim's most
hated noise, so he's glad we moved. BUT.. today is holiday, tomorrow is the
weekend, afro's like to party, and I have already seen a large stage and marquee
erected next to the marina. Probably best not to mention it, although I'm afraid
I am hearing the creole warm up of the PA system and it's NOT in the distance.
Boys have gone ashore, I'm just drying out the water tank spillage. It's a
substantial town. Very West African, lots of brightly painted wooden fishing
boats for the locals, a sandy but scruffy town beach with lots of loud chatter.
We are in squall country, which means that every hour or so, the clouds gather,
the wind whips up from no where and you are temporarily in an English winter for
20 minutes or so. Then all goes tranquil again til the next time. So guess
what.. we are a few hundred miles from the equator and ..yes.. it is pouring
with rain and blowing a gale. But not for long.
We plan to stay here for 2 or 3 days, check the boat
over, restock and carry on.
