We have just departed from Marina Del Este having had an early start,
leaving the berth at 0730 on 18th June. We had a wonderful few days at Punta
del Este which has to be one of the most beautiful spots on this coast. We
were berthed stern to the wharf and the little family restaurant that we
used was literally 10 feet from the stern of the boat. Almost too handy for
a quick cup of coffee or a meal and a glass of wine. As with other parts of
Spain nothing much comes to life before 1000 but they are still having their
evening meal at 2300. Siesta between 1400 and 1600 is also a matter of
course. Del Este is a very small marina constructed out of an old fishing
port. Manoeuvring is a bit on the tight side for a boat the size of Osprey
as the facilities are really designed for power yachts with twin screws and
bowthrusters. We managed however and it is one of those places that would
always be on our list for a return visit. We are now heading for Almerimar
as we decided that we needed to be there for Saturday to ensure we could
hire a car to get Wife and Strife back to Malaga airport on Monday morning.
We were a bit concerned that if we left it until Sunday we might find that
the car hire facilities were closed. The distance is about 50 miles and
there is no wind at all - absolutely flat calm - so it will probably take us
all day. We met some interesting people at del Este including Steve and Mike
who run a small charter business there. They both have boats and take out up
to ten tourists for day sails at E70 per head. They seemed quite busy and
even asked if we would like to join their business. Osprey was as usual the
attraction and certainly would be an asset for them. We had no interest
although Del Este would have been a pleasant place to life and work - albeit
very expensive. Almerimar will be the other end of the scale being a large
marina and said to be low cost. We are intending to leave the boat there for
a few week before heading across to Sardinia.
