14:43.929N 061:10.87W We set off with reefed Genoa, as always the wind was gusting across the bay - we had 20-25knots and were flying along when we saw a massive pod of dolphins heading across our bow, Clare, Terry and me scrambled to the bow and I got some video footage of them all leaping as they went past obviously on a serious mission, sadly no photos! We were charmed and a little later we had a shore visit from a pod. ![]() ![]() We arrived in St Pierre and anchored by midday, once settled we decided to go for a snorkel on the wrecks we dived last time. Terry and Clare were treated to clear water and lots of fish. The following day we waited until a few showers had passed before we headed ashore, went for a coffee before wandering up to the museum which is dedicated to the volcanic eruption, we haven’t been before , we opted to listen to the information and though small it was interesting, they still do not know how many people died, then the volcano began to show signs of increased activity the officials were telling residents not to panic and it was safe, most stayed and some of those in surrounding areas even headed to the perceived safety of St Pierre! A few didn’t stay and headed away and ultimately survived, in St Pierre there was one survivor - a prisoner - however the museum raised the question was he really a survivor or someone who was there looting after the event who pretended he had survived in the prison?? only 2 other people on the outskirts of St Pierre survived and possible as many as 30,000 died which was 1/6 of the islands population. ![]() |
