Jolly was windy and there was a bit of fetch where we were so we moved a couple of miles along the coast to Ffreys Bay to get the dinghy on deck, we haven’t actually had this one on deck yet but found it sort of fits so we could glue the Velcro onto it to fix chaps to.
We were getting everything ready and Steve was in the cockpit watching 3 jetskis behave recklessly around the anchorage going round the boats and much too close! An accident waiting to happen - and it didn’t take long before one collided into the side of Innamorata 🤬🤬🤬 some shouting followed , the driver was a bit shocked and apologetic, when Steve was talking to him he lost control again and somehow went in between the boat and anchor chain nearly getting the anchor chain around his pillions neck! It was his first time on a jet ski he told us before he left, we thought he was heading to the shore but he went off with his friends and played more further away from the boats! A nearby boat who had witnessed the incident came over and Steve  was able to get in their dinghy and look if there was any damage, it’s a minor scuff but that’s not the point! The nice neighbour took Steve where he located the rental operator and explained the incident, who recalled the jet ski and brought the driver to Innamorata on the back of another jet ski. During this interaction, the rental company representative stated that the incident was not their responsibility, claiming that they simply tell renters to stay away from boats and that any accidents or liability rest solely with the riders. The  driver a  Canadian day visitor from a cruise ship gave us his name and phone number but doesn’t use WhatsApp 🙄 so not much use to us, he offered some money which we accepted as we will never get anywhere once he leaves.
Our main concern was  the attitude of the rental company who take no responsibility for their clients reckless behaviour and any accidents and stated their insurance didn’t cover accidents, I’m glad it wasn’t more serious and no one was injured!
Drama over, we could get on with the task in hand glueing! We are using a 2 part glue and it needs to be put on hull and Velcro once, left 20 mins then reapplied and stuck together when still tacky! Well that’s the theory, we decided to do it in sections and it dried so fast it wasn’t really tacky. The second area we got the first layer of glue on and of course the heavens opened 😩, we really didn’t have much choice but to cover it as best we could to keep it as dry as possible and then dry and carry on once the shower had stopped! We got the Velcro onto the outside before we ran out of glue 🥴. The day wasn’t going well!
Abandoning the glueing until we have more glue.
The following day it rained every time we went to do anything so we achieved very little except I caught up with blogs and we emailed a report to the maritime authorities here about the jetski incident in the hope they do a better job of regulating the people hiring them out and clear guidance is given about safe riding etc.
