| We spent a half-day with a guide touring the area of Gallipoli, mainly just the Turkish War Memorial and the British Memorials. This is the Turkish Memorial which was raised 1954-1960, paid for by a subscription of TL10 from every Turkish family. It is 40 Meters high and stands atop a cliff 48 meters high overlooking the entrance to the Dardanelles.  Unfortunately the British memorial, only a few miles away, and even closer to Helles Point, was being renovated ready for the 100th Anniversary - so this was the best picture I could get. It is surrounded by a wall on which are plaques engraved with the names of all those known killed, by regiment, in order of regimental seniority at the time.  This is a model of "Lancashire Landing", on the hill overlooking where the Lancashire Fusileers came ashore. The fort in the background had been blown up when a Navy shell hit the magazine - all the occupants were killed.  Unfortunately, none of the Fusileers got any further than this - 1285 are buried here. You can see the ruined fort in the background.  |
