Today we will arrive in Estepona the end of this
leg of the journey. Malaga was last night's lay over and given the season
we were not surprised to find it very quiet. I think the further south you
go in Spain the later they eat dinner, non of the restaurants we encountered
were even open at 8pm it was only as 9pm approached that lights started to come
on. After walking for quite some distance from the boat we did finally
find a pub opposite a restaurant that looked like it was about to open.
The food we had was really quite excellent despite the fact that we had nothing
to do with the selection and ordering process. The owner came and sat at
our table for 20 minutes while he explained in Spanish what his recommendation
was. In the end the 2 starter courses and roast baby lamb was wonderful,
we just did not know what it would be until it arrived.
We anchored off Malaga beach which was under
reconstruction at the time, with truck after truck of sand arriving and being
leveled by a very noisy bulldozer. Not the ideal place but there was
really no other shelter to be found. We went for the only swim of the trip
and the water here is really quite cold, maybe as we get closer to the Atlantic
the water mixes and the temperature drops.
Today started well, a nice breeze (which lasted for
30 mins) blew us along at 8+ Knots, hopefully it will return. We also
caught another fish, I seem to hook a lot but some seem able to throw the
hook. Within 5 minutes of letting out the line we had 2 bites and we have
landed a bonito for lunch. Not as big as others I have caught but
certainly worth the effort and it will be plenty for 2. I think this bodes
well for the Atlantic trip and we even have a (somewhat reluctant) convert to
seafood, or at least some of the fish we caught.
So today ends this leg of the journey and we will
be back on the 9th for the sail down to the Canaries and then on to St
Lucia.
