We are on our last day here in Penrhyn. We are planning on pulling up
anchor and starting our 870 mile passage to Apia (Samoa) later today as the
forecast is looking good.
The last week has been more relaxing and adventures here in the small
village of Te Tautua. We went out with some of the locals to fish for trevally.
We went out of the passage to the open ocean and use small fish as bait. While
fishing we counted 12 sharks hanging around our boat. So far the types of fish
we have been eating are: trevally, milk fish, parrot fish, and tuna.
We went snorkeling a few times in some of the passes leading into the
lagoon. The reefs we amazing and we have started getting more comfortable
swimming with the sharks, but they do seem to keep us on edge.
While checking out with the immigration officer on Monday in the village of
Amoka, we were able to go visit the World War II landing strip that the
Americans build and saw some old, abandon pearl farms. – Now in Penrhyn they
only dive for natural pearls versus farm them.
One of the very friendly locals, Mr. T (as we call him), made Phil, Tyler
and I necklaces made from mother of pearl shells. – A very generous gift!
(We are going to try to get in one last snorkel today before pulling up
anchor)
Stay tunes for updates during passage. |
