Moorea
Monday night (27th) we anchored just inside the reef s-e of Raiatea ready to head through the nearby pass and sail to Huahine in the morning. Phil had a swim to check the anchor and a ray swam by checking on him! I saw rays swim by the next morning as we set off on the ocean sail - about 5 hrs upwind in 15-20 kts of wind to Huahine. Tyler & I went ashore for water and provisions while Phil sorted paperwork on board. We’d hoped to go ashore again (all 3) but the Mercury outboard threw a tantrum. Another job on Phil’s to do list. The big sail... up at 5.45am, left at first light Wed 29th under Capt’n’s
orders for the approx 100 mile upwind challenge to Moorea. Again 15-20 kts,
waves up to 2m+. Looked bigger to me although I tried not to look, just make the
most of the challenge, hold on and avoid more bruises! Sea Monkey well heeled
over but coped well. Just the odd little leak. Best news is no sick sailors!! 27
hrs later and a very salty boat, tired Capt’n and crew arrived in beautiful,
calm Oponohu Bay. Such a contrast – we’d earned this quiet peaceful anchorage.
Only boat in the bay. We’re nestled under green, rocky peaks and spires. A
really stunning setting.
First a swim and salty wash, quick solar shower. Then sleep. Later Phil got
the water-maker going and sorted the new inverter. 2 big jobs crossed off the
list. Tyler & I rowed ashore to have a walk and a look. Now Friday (31st)
and Tyler’s been for a run and hitched into Paopao, the little town in the next
bay, Cooks Bay. Meanwhile Phil & Mother hiked up to the Belvedere view-pt.
I’m fascinated by everything it seems: the rainforest vegetation, beautiful
flowers fallen everywhere, huge bamboo, streams and a pool with shrimp in. Then
there are the pineapple plantations, marae (archaeological remains) and faces
carved in rocks. Skinks, big snails, land crabs, birds. All new and wonderful to
me. Loving it.
Another night here and then we’ll probably move to anchor just outside the
bay for 2 nights. Monday (happy birthday Chris xx) on to Tahiti
probably. |
