Half Century B'Day in Granada

Each of the islands visited so far are the same but different. They all have beautiful scenery with lovely beaches but each have their own character.

The moment we arrived in Granada we felt very comfortable. There were quality properties dotted around Prickly Bay which were in a different league from the other islands and we were greeted by the local cruisers radio net. This net was run by a familiar sounding English voice and covered a range of subjects like weather, safety & security, 'treasures of the bilge', and provided a media to meet other cruisers. The Island is larger and more developed than the Grenadines with a greater variety of shops (which pleased Joanne) and more in the way of industry. Without sounding too much like the local tourist board, we really liked it here and we are planning to go back. We will stay longer next time and check out the hinter land with its rain forests and its associated creatures, you know exotic birds, monkeys, dodgy snakes and those lovely creepy crawlies. We also have to buy some more boat bits and this is the place to do it (no import duty or tax for in transit cruisers).

It so happens that the 7th February is not only my birthday but also Granada Independence Day. Whats the chances of arriving on an arbitary island on my 50th birthday during the local Independence knees up? Pretty slim me thinks, so it would be almost rude not to take advantage of it. Not only that, Roger & Vicki, sailing & boozing pals from my Triangle race days, happened to be there too. The six of us (Neil & Tracy, Roger & Vicki, Me & Jo) started the day with a bottle of champagne and a ginger bread me.

The ginger bread man had beady eyes, looked like an overgrown baby with wrinkles and creases all over, and was supposed to look like me, thanks very much Tracy!!!

Unfortunately we spent too much time boozing on the boat, cos by the time we got the bus into St Georges Town, all the parades and festivities were over, D'oh. We did manage to find a restaurant still open on the water front, had some good nosh there and then we finished off boozing the night away at the True Blue Resort overlooking the bay listening to live calypso music. After 9 hours of drinking and eating, none of us were seriously p****d, except perhaps Vicki, but it was felt we had given the momentus day some justice.

Thanks to everyone for your kind birthday wishes and pressies.

Next stop Tinidad for de Carnival & even more excesses.
