We have finally managed to get a little further
than the beech bars, - we managed to get to the Barbados Yacht Club which is
another 100 metres, phew almost 5 mins without alcoholic
refreshment.
The yacht club is just like we hoped it would be. A
white washed building that smacks of the old British colonial days. It has a
beech front, a boat storage yard, tennis courts, a croquet
lawn and you guessed it 2 bars and 2 restaurants. We had a
great lunch with Shaun & Cara at the beech bar. We liked it so much we
become temporary members and even bought the tee-shirt.
Adonde arrived this morning and has gone
straight to the port to check in. Judging by our brief radio com, they sound
quite chipper and are looking forward to their first rum punch and probably a
nap significantly longer than their normal 3 hour watch
keeping period. We are looking forward to hearing their story.
There have been a number of casulties this year.
Upto 6 boats have been abondoned and some have lost their rig or their
rudder and are limping into Barbados. We are not totally upto speed with
the facts but nobody was thought to be seriously hurt, although one skipper is
thought to have lost the plot, had a nervous breakdown and threw himself over
the side. He was recovered ok and he & the crew were taken off their
yacht onto a ship. Richard & Jans boat 'Scorpio' has also sustained
some damage to their rigging and are motoring the last 400 miles. Our trip was
quite dull by comparison.
We are planning to sail west to Bequia on
Sunday/Monday. We need to be in Trinidad in a couple of weeks for the carnival,
so we shall start heading that way soon.
