Finally, we left Lagos on Wednesday 26th August, having received and fitted a new control box for our windlass. Unfortunately, this was not the only fault and a new foot switch now has to be found and fitted. Nevertheless, we did not want to delay further and so we set off for the Isla da Culhatra, which we rerached just before sunset.
This is a delightful and large anchorage, South of Faro with extended sand bars and river to the town itself. We had the anchorage virtually to ourselves but this made us a bit of a target for the numerous fishing boats  travelling past during the night.

The next day we set off at first light for Chipiona but half way there decided to extend the passage to go directly to Cadiz, where we arrived at 8.15 pm.

We planned to stay in Cadiz for a couple of nights and walked into the city the following morning to visit the sights.

View of Cadiz on our way in from the marina along the sea wall

View from the Torre Tavira - one of the highest towers in Cadiz

The view back over the roofs towards the docks and marina

Typical narrow street in the old town

Example of the ornate balustrades that adorn the buildings

Our stay in Cadiz may now be extended as Easterlies have set in and a Levanter is forecast to blow through the Straits of Gibraltar  for the next few days, so we will still be behind our intended schedule. On the plus side, the weather is superb with clear blue skies and the scenery magnificent. Our one regret is the extent to which public places have been despoilt with graffiti, but this was a curse that afflicted many places in Portugal as well.
